Membership Information


New Membership:

If you are Interested in becoming a member, please complete the online application form. Memberships are valid for 1 year from the date of registration. To obtain your receipt after completion of your application, please log in to your account, go to "My Membership" and upload the relevant receipt for printing.

 

Membership Renewal:

If you are a current member or your membership has been expired and need to renew your membership, then please log-in to your CMBES account and proceed to "My Membership". If you can't remember your log-in information, you can use the "Forgot your password? Get-help" link available at the log-in page.

 


Membership Categories

Full member

Membership is open to all persons who are graduates of a university or technical program relating to some aspect of biomedical engineering in its broadest sense.

 

Student Member

A student member must carry at least 50% of a normal full time academic program as a registered undergraduate or graduate student in a regular course of study in a discipline related to biomedical engineering. Typical programs would be those in mechanical and electrical engineering, medicine, kinesiology, engineering technology or related arts and science programs. Doctoral fellows who are part students/part working are also eligible for this category of membership.

 

Student Institutional memberships

Student Institutional Memberships for groups of more than 2 students are available and have the same criteria and benefits as the Corporate Membership. This plan is designed to assist universities and colleges provide membership in the Society for their students.

 

Corporate Membership

The CMBES Corporate Membership plan is available to any organization in the public or private sector who wishes to register a group of members. This plan is designed to assist employers in providing membership in the Society for their employees (see Membership Benefits). The organizer of the Corporate Membership account does not need to be a member, but must take responsibility for registering and renewing members of the account. Hospitals, companies and educational institutions that employ biomedical engineering professionals should take advantage of the Corporate or Institutional Membership.

 

Fellowship Membership

This shall be conferred on members who upon recommendation by the Membership Committee are deemed by the Executive to have rendered outstanding service to medical and biological engineering in one of the fields of organization, practice, development or research. Fellows shall pay the same fees as Members and shall also have the same privileges and responsibilites. Any member can bring potential candidates for Fellowship to the attention of the Membership Committee. Fellows, upon retirement shall be exempt from fees, but will retain their privileges in the Society.

 

Part-Time Membership
This shall be open to all persons who are unemployed or who are on unpaid leave from their regular employment or studies (e.g. family leave) and who would otherwise be eligible to be Full or Student members.  Individuals will be allowed to hold part-time membership for no more than three consecutive years. Part-time members will pay reduced fees. They shall have no voting privileges.

 

Membership Fees

Current annual membership fees:

  • Full member: $130.00
  • Student member: $35.00
  • Corporate member: 2-5 members ($120 each), 6-9 members ($110 each), 10-19 members ($100 each), 20-29 members ($90 each)
  • Student institutional: $30 each (minimum 2 students)
  • Retired member: $35
  • Part-time member: $75

 

Membership benefits

CMBES members represent the biomedical engineering community, in its broadest sense. Membership provides ongoing interaction with peers and a forum for national initiatives and professional advancement. Benefits include:

  • Reduced rates at the CMBES conference, and some international conferences;
  • Reduced rates for continuing education courses and opportunities to earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs);
  • Membership in the IFMBE;
  • Preferred subscription rates to the IFMBE Medical and Biological Engineering and Computing Journal;
  • Members only access section on the website which includes: by-laws, newsletter, membership directory, list of Fellows, Emeritus, other award winners and more;
  • Discounted rate on job postings for members;
  • The Society Newsletter highlights issues of importance in health care technology, upcoming events, items of interest to our members, etc.;
  • Special rates for Workshop Proceedings, Conference Digests and the Clinical Engineering Standards of Practice.
  • Reduced membership rates with affiliated societies such as the APIBQ in Quebec

Student membership benefits 

  • Professional exposure to the health care field through seminars, tours, invited speakers;
  • Student rates for the CMBES national conference, as well as reduced rates for some international conferences;
  • Student Paper Competition held at the CMBES Conference, open only to CMBES Student Members.
