Clinical Engineering departments play a unique roll in enhancing patient safety. In this session three different patient safety and quality issues of interest to Clinical Engineers will be discussed. Alarm issues are frequently reported as factors in adverse incidents and ECRI Institute has rated alarm hazards as the most significant medical technology hazard. Tubing misconnections are also known to contribute to adverse events; in this session misconnections with piggyback infusions will be highlighted. Finally, results of an analysis of infusion pump history logs will demonstrate the patient safety and quality informatics that can be isolated from these devices.

Modern technologies for surgery are continually introduced to hospital operating rooms with the intention of seamless integration in order to advance patient care, diagnosis and treatment while providing added healthcare benefits and efficiencies. This session will focus on advanced imaging modalities, laser therapy, robotics, navigation, and communication systems used in integrated operating room environments. The area of operating room integration is becoming a multidisciplinary approach with the emphasis on communication between surgeons, engineers, vendors and administrators. A practical experience from a clinical engineering perspective will be presented.

The online Healthcare Technology Collaboration (HTC) concept is being developed and your input and support is vital to developing a useful and sustainable tool that can be used by all Canadian hospitals and health authorities. The test site will be presented with requests for feedback and support from the audience (a survey tool will guide the discussions). Ideas for funding and sustainability will also be discussed.
The HTC concept is a Wikipedia-like online tool that will include the following for each topic:
  1. A validated technical summary of key issues for the topic (with date of last update).
  2. A verified list of links to online resources and references.
  3. Downloadable tools, articles, templates, reports, etc. submitted by HTC members or developed directly by HTC (all files de-identified and edited by HTC).
  4. Contacts who have agreed to be listed as experts on the topic.
  5. List of consultants who have experience in the topic area.
  6. Links to related HTC topics.

Canadian Standards Association will discuss its structures, functions and interaction with the other local regulatory bodies such as Health Canada and Accreditation Canada (AC). A technical iconoclast is someone who seeks to overthrow popular technical views. In this interactive session, pairs of speakers will debate opposite sides on a number of controversial topics. They will each have five minutes to present their arguments. There will then be an open debate, with audience members invited to challenge the views presented. The presenters will be asked to vigorously defend his or her views. The moderator will poll the audience before and after each debate to determine whether the presenters’ arguments swayed any audience members. There will be a valuable prize for the presentation that sways the most votes.
